The staff at Shaftsbury Elementary continues to work hard to educate our students. We have a culture of professional collaboration and an infrastructure that effectively and efficiently uses the expertise and dedication of our highly qualified staff and available resources.
We have a number of new staff members who have been a wonderful addition to the Shaftsbury School community. We are pleased to have Laura Maguire-Jones as a 4th Grade Teacher, Lauren Maguire and Mariah Slavin as Special Education Teachers, Chris Fifield as our Physical Education Teacher, Karen Aiken as a 6th Grade Teacher and Andrea Bartholdi as a Kindergarten Paraprofessional.
For the first time last spring our students took the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium or SBAC which is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. This was a new and challenging experience for our students. Since the SBAC assessment was so new the State of Vermont did not use the data for Annual Yearly Progress designation this year.
Our goals for this year were many; a focus on student progress, technology and social/emotional learning. We are currently in year two of MultiTiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) for math and literacy. This approach to instruction and intervention is comprehensive and systematic to assess and monitor student performance academically.
Shaftsbury prides itself in preparing our students for the 21st century. We now have 1:1 computing throughout the school. This year the teachers have begun to explore the SAMR Model of technology integration. Taking the use of technology from the Substituting stage to the Redefinition stage.
We are spending time looking at the social/emotional needs of our students. Working with Kathleen Lane to create a Comprehensive Integrated Three Tiered Model of supports to address student behavior and social/emotional learning with the goal of helping the student be available to learn when they come to school.
I would like to thank the Parent Teacher Organization and After School Shaftsbury for all the opportunities they bring to our Shaftsbury students. The PTO also received the Lowe’s Beautification Grant to enhance the landscaping at the front of the school.
Finally, thank you to the students, parents, staff, community members and the school board for all their support. Together, you all make Shaftsbury Elementary “ A Wonderful Place to Learn.”
