About Us

From the Office of the Principal

2017-2017

Over the past year the Shaftsbury faculty and staff continued its commitment to providing the best education to our students. We have focused on a number of initiatives to create a safe, supportive, and enriching learning environment.

The school worked closely with the district Safety and Security Coordinator Victor Milani to create a Comprehensive Safety and Security manual that clarifies procedures and roles in emergency situations. We also identified areas of the school where we could make security improvements. With Mr. Milani’s recommendations, we have included funds in the FY 2019 budget for an exterior camera system, a new phone system, and a visitor identification system.

Technology integration continues to be a goal of our school. With monetary help from the Shaftsbury Parent Teacher Organization we were able to dedicate a portion of our computer lab as makerspace. Makerspace allows students an organized space to explore, create, collaborate, imagine and produce things; they will be exposed to invaluable hands on experiences, not always available during regularly scheduled class times. A makerspace gives our students a place to move away from consuming technology to creating with technology.

We refined our Multi Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS), particularly around our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). There has been a significant decrease in behavioral referrals since starting this system a year ago.

Students met their projected growth rates goal of 2-5% in grades 3rd through 6th for math and reading as measured by Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for the 2016-2017 school year. While we met our our growth rate goal on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) in english language arts assessment with 45% of our students proficient or higher, we still have work to do in mathematics with 38% being proficient or higher.

We are exploring ways to maximize student achievement by efficiently using our resources through common math and literacy instructional time scheduling. Staff regularly monitor student progress throughout the school year and use specific research-based interventions to assist identified students in reaching their potential.

I would like to thank the parents, school board, and community for their continued support of our< community school. It is an honor to be part of Shaftsbury Elementary, to witness the dedication and hard work the staff display everyday to make Shaftsbury a wonderful place to learn.

Respectfully submitted,
